It’s officially the first day of autumn and I’m breaking down my top 10 fall fashion trends for 2020. Fall fashion happens to be many people’s favorite time of the year; it’s the season for layering and having the opportunity to really style different pieces from one’s closet. Every season a ton of trends hits the runways, however every trend does not translate well to every day wear.
Below I’m sharing some fashion forward trends worthy of wearing this season and many of these trends might already be apart of your wardrobe.

Lingerie wear: Okay so at first I must admit, I wasn’t too fond of the lingerie wear trend. I thought to myself, “Who is really going to wear lingerie like clothing when it’s cold outside.” However, that thought quickly left my mind when I visited a Zara store recently. This trend was heavily merchandised throughout the store and styled to perfection. The styling and merchandise selection in Zara convinced me to take part in this trend.
Style tip: Remember this is a sexier trend to wear, however it’s still meant to be worn in a sophisticated way. Pairing a bralette over a button up shirt or corset top over a t-shirt is a great way to style this trend.

School girl chic: The preppy style is great for a casual, daytime look. Designers played up this theme by pairing mini to knee length skirts with cardigans, and button up shirts.
Styling tip: This is such a wearable trend, I guarantee most people already have garments in their wardrobe to create this preppy casual look. A cardigan or pull over sweater, button up collared shirt and loafers is a great way to achieve this casual fit. If you want to take the preppy look to the next level, rock a pair of reading glasses to really play into this trend.

Plaid: Plaid is the print of this season. Burberry utilized it’s icon printed logo and the end result was Burberry plaid printed suits, skirts, and trench coats. Other designers optioned for coordinated plaid sets like this Stella McCarthy window panel print (centered above), and one of the most popular plaid prints, the tartan print shown at Monse (pictured right).
Style tip: Plaid is such a versatile print. Pick which plaid print suits your personal style best and wear it with confidence.

Fringe: Fringe is a fun detail on clothing and accessories which elevates a garment/accessory to another level. Fringe adds a fun and playful element to a look. Givenchy introduced fringe to evening wear with a full length white gown with accent fringe detailing at the shoulders and waist (left photo); while Bottega Veneta created an oversized teddy shearling coat with exaggerated fringe that even the queen Rihanna recently wore on the cover on Harper Bazaar’s September 2020 issue.
Style Tip: There’s no need to wear head to toe fringe. Settle for a fringe jacket, pants, handbag, etc and style your fit around one statement piece. If fringe it not for you, try wearing an fringed accessory like a pair of earrings, shoes, or handbag. Fringe detailing has so much movement and is definitely a underestimated statement piece.

Cropped Blazers: The cropped blazers with the strong shoulder pads from the 80’s are back in full effect. Looking for a new blazer this fall, optioned for a shorter blazer version that’s very on trend this season.
Styling tip: A cropped blazer can be wore just as you would with a longer version. A cropped blazer paired with a mini skirt, wide leg pants, or knee high boots is a great way to style this silhouette and be on trend.

Capes: Capes are the not so basic outerwear jackets to emerge from F/W 2020 shows and appears to be the new “it” jacket for fall. A unique spin on the trench coats, blazers, puffers, and even on dresses, capes will be a fun addition to your closet this season.
Styling tip: There’s plenty of silhouettes to choose from; trench coats, puffers, blazers, etc. Choosing a cape jacket that compliments your body type, fits properly, and is functional to wear are important factors to consider if you want to put off this look successfully.

Colorblocking: Colorblocking has been an reoccurring trend for a few seasons now. This fall two tone pants (like Moncler photo far right above) have been presented, in addition to styling separate solid colors pieces together.
Style tip: In my opinion, my favorite colorblock looks are styled when the colors are within the same tonal ranges. For example, if you’ll using a pastel color like mint green, a turquoise blue would be a great complementary color. Also, wearing different shades of one colorway is a great alternative if styling multiple colors isn’t your thing.

Grey: Grey is a great alternative color to black that is equally as great as a neutral fall color. The cool, neutral, and balanced looked is timeless and practical for all occasions. It’s also great for a formal, conservative, and sophisticated look.
Style tip: If you’re tired of wearing black, just substitute the black sweater or turtleneck in for a grey version and there goes your “I wear too much black dilemma.”

All shades of green: Fall and winter is not all about muted, neutral tone colors. It’s okay to add color to your wardrobe for fall. One jeweled tone color to make a strong presence of fall’s 2020 runways was green.
Style tip: All shades of green from vibrant tones like emerald & seafoam to muted greens like sage and olive appeared on the runways. Finding the right shade of green that compliments your skin tone is key to wearing one of this season’s hottest colors.
Head to toe black: Black is a classic color, works well with everything and looks great on all body shapes. Almost every single designer created a head to toe black look this season because it truly is a easy, carefree color to wear.
Style tip: Not that anyone really needs a tip on how to wear black, however I would suggest adding gold, bronze, or silver jewelry to give an all black look some life if you do feel your look is too dull.
These are my top picks for Fall 2020 fashion trends. Of course there’s tons of other trends that made a presence on the 2020’s fall runways, however these are the top trends I’ve spotted in stores and on the gram already. Do you follow fashion trends? If so, what trends do you look forward to wearing this fall?
